DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and impactful full-day Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification Course\, designed to equip you with essential skills to assist individuals experiencing a mental health crisis or decline in well-being. Taking place in-person\, this interactive training is scheduled from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and will provide you with hands-on techniques to recognize\, support\, and guide individuals toward recovery. \nThroughout the course\, participants will learn how to: \n\nRecognize early signs of mental health declines or crises\nEncourage open discussions about mental health and well-being\nGuide individuals to appropriate professional or community supports\nOffer support in mental health or substance use crises\nUse MHFA actions to maintain your own mental health\n\nUpon successful completion\, participants will receive a Mental Health First Aid certificate from the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). \nPre-Course Requirement:\nBefore attending the in-person training\, participants must complete a self-directed online module (Module 1)\, which introduces key concepts and strategies to be explored in the live training (Modules 2 and 3). The online module takes approximately 2 hours to complete\, and proof of completion is required prior to the start of the in-person modules. Completion of Module 1 is mandatory to participate in the in-person course. Failure to complete the online module by the specified deadline will make the participant ineligible for a refund or transfer of registration. \nImportant Note: A minimum of 8 participants is required for the training to proceed. DESCRIPTION:This two-day\, three-hour instructor-led virtual training equips Return-to-Work Coordinators with the tools\, strategies\, and expert guidance to support injured workers through every stage of recovery. Learn proactive approaches\, effective communication with WorkSafeBC\, and real-world planning techniques to foster successful\, sustainable returns to work. \nEvent Dates:  \nDay 1: October 22nd- 9:00AM – 12:00 PM PST\nDay 2: October 23rd- 9:00AM – 12:00 PM PST \nLearning Objectives: \n\nApply a proactive approach to RTW and support an injured worker starting from the moment of injury\nLearn how to communicate effectively with WorkSafeBC throughout the return-to-work process\, with a focus on supporting mental and physical health claims.\nIdentify and provide suitable and/or alternate work that aligns with an injured worker’s functional abilities.\nImplement strategies to maintain the injured worker’s connection to the workplace during recovery.\nDevelop\, monitor\, and adjust effective stay-at-work and return-to-work plans.\n\nKey topics include: \n\nThe four stages of the RTW process.\nBenefits of early intervention\, starting from the time of injury.\nDifferences between suitable and alternate duties.\nCategorizing tasks as light\, medium\, or heavy.\nCreating suitable work offers that match worker abilities.\nCommunicating with WorkSafeBC.\nDeveloping and monitoring stay-at-work/RTW plans.\nTroubleshooting challenges post-return.\n\nParticipants will complete self-assessments and have the option to take a quiz. DESCRIPTION:Frontline and healthcare workers regularly encounter clients facing deeply rooted challenges like substance use\, mental illness\, and trauma. Under pressure\, even the most ethical and skilled professionals may unknowingly fall into blame-based thinking\, which can damage trust and reduce the effectiveness of care. \n\n\n\n\nThis webinar offers a practical\, strengths-based alternative: narrative therapy’s concept of externalization\, which teaches us to separate the person from the problem. Drawing on real-world examples\, Brian will show you how to apply this approach in your daily practice—building stronger\, more collaborative relationships with clients and improving health outcomes. \n\n\n\n\nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to:\n\n\n\n\n\nDescribe the core principles of narrative therapy\, including the concept of externalization.\nApply the externalization technique to real-world healthcare and outreach scenarios.\nStrengthen therapeutic relationships by shifting from a blame-based lens to a collaborative\, client-centered approach.\nRecognize how narrative therapy can support ethical\, strengths-based responses to complex challenges like substance use\, depression\, and the opioid crisis.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenter\n\n\n\n\nBrian Dean Williams is a registered clinical counsellor and approved clinical supervisor. Brian has worked on the frontlines for 28 years with folks struggling with mental health\, substance use\, housing\, and marginalization. He has worked in the downtown eastside in Vancouver\, and in small First Nations (Indigenous) communities. Brian’s main modalities are narrative therapy and Buddhist psychology\, although he also draws from other collaborative forms of counselling and community work. He has taught at Correctional Services of Canada\, Raincity Housing\, Vancouver Coastal Health\, the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation\, and many more.
