Overview
Opioid poisoning is an important workplace safety concern for community social service workers supporting people experiencing substance use, housing instability, and other complex challenges. Adapted with permission from BCCDC’s Towards the Heart program team, this awareness-level course equips frontline workers, supervisors, and managers with the practical knowledge to recognize the stages and signs of opioid poisoning and respond safely until emergency medical help arrives.
Through interactive learning activities, participants will explore how opioids and other unregulated drugs affect the body, how naloxone works, and how to prepare and administer injectable and nasal naloxone. By the end of the course, learners will be better prepared to respond confidently and effectively while supporting safer environments for the people they support.

- Explain the SAVE ME steps for responding to an opioid poisoning.
- Describe how to care for someone after naloxone has been administered, until emergency medical services arrive.
- Identify resources and supports related to naloxone and opioid poisoning response.
